Are You a Good Boss to Yourself?

Whether you've gone solo or are just considering it, it's a good idea to evaluate your self-management.

Answer these questions to find out if you're perhaps too hard, or too easy, on yourself:

1. Do you give yourself regular breaks during work hours?
What's a "break"?
When it doesn't interfere with work.
Nearly every day.

2. Do you force yourself to work overtime even when you're burnt out?
It's part of the job.
No, it's not worth it.

3. Do you ever consult with friends for advice and fresh ideas?
There's never time.
Once in a while.

4. Do you outsource time-consuming tasks like bookkeeping to focus on your core business?
I like to be completely self-reliant.
Some things.
Yes, my time's too important for busywork.

5. It's a hectic day and your teen-age daughter calls on your business phone. You...
remind her not to call you at work.
tell her you'll call her later.
take a break and chat.

6. When was your last vacation?
Sometime in the '80s.
Within the last five years.
Within the last year.

7. You have a high fever, but are facing deadlines. You ...
take a lot of Tylenol and buckle down.
get some rest and rush the jobs.
tell your clients you're sick and get a lot of rest.

8. What do you tell yourself when you find an error in your work?
"Idiot! Fix it!"
"Uh-oh, does this need to be fixed?"

9. Your back is bothering you. You happen to see a cool ergonomic chair in the office supply store, but it's kind of pricey. You...
stick with the old chair. It's served you OK for years.
decide to reward yourself with a new chair when you close the next big deal.
buy it anyway.

10. What are your working hours?
8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Six to eight hours per day.

Score key:

1015 Go easy on yourself. You can't make progress unless you set reasonable goals. Use that intensity for success, not bullying.

1624 You're the boss. You might have just the balance and pacing required for a successful independent career.

2530 You may be better suited to life as a corporate suckling than the brutal day-to-day strains of working for yourself.
