PHILOSOPHY
Pat Love, Ed.D., is a charter faculty member of the Institute for Imago Relationship Therapy based in Orlando, Fla.
In Imago Relationship Therapy, the purpose of marriage or a committed partnership is to provide emotional healing, psychological growth and ultimately spiritual development. The concepts were popularized in the New York Times bestsellers, Getting the Love You Want and Keeping the Love You Find by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D.
The "Imago" is the unconscious image we hold of our parents. People select their mates by seeking "Imago matches" — individuals who resemble their parents in significant ways. A couple's relationship is created and shaped as each partner interacts with his or her Imago match, revisiting unfinished or unresolved issues from their childhood.
The main distinction of Imago Relationship Therapy is that by stressing the importance, sacredness and primacy of the couple, it moves the responsibility for the main healing work from the therapist-client relationship to the couple: each partner becomes a skilled advocate and "container" for the other's growth.
The Institute for Imago Relationship Therapy was founded in 1984 by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., and Helen Hunt, M.A. and is under the direction of Rick Brown, Th.M. It offers face-to-face learning opportunities and products that teach the dynamics of the committed relationship in achieving personal growth. This includes national and international workshops and seminars for couples and singles, as well as training programs for qualified therapists in the theory and practice of Imago Relationship Therapy.
More than 1,400 certified Imago therapists and Imago therapists-in-training, more than 100 workshop presenters and an Institute faculty of 20 clinical instructors and clinical-instructors-in-training offer therapy, workshops and training as well as conducting ongoing research.
